The inspired score for Balibo by Lisa Gerrard and the vibrant soundtrack album from Death Defying Acts by Cezary Skubiszewski were the feature film winners at the year’s Screen Music Awards, a vibrant and inspiring event that upstages most other film awards with a 15 piece orchestra and a stylish sit down dinner after the presentations, which this year featured guest artists Lisa Gerrard and Ego Lemos, reports Andrew L. Urban.

Award nominee, East Timorese musician Ego Lemos performed the winning song, Balibo, from the film and Lisa Gerrard performed an extract of her score, The Invasion. Presenters at the City Recital Hall event in Sydney were Bruce Beresford, Robert Connolly, Jonathan Biggins, Steve Knapman, Julia Zemiro, Arts Minister Peter Garrett, and Susie Porter. The awards were hosted by The Chaser’s Chris Taylor & Andrew Hansen and the (terrific) orchestra was conducted by Paul Grabowsky.

The closing performance of the presentations was a tribute to Guy Gross, recipient of the International Achievement Award, the orchestra playing an extract from his dynamic score for East West 101. The after party – for the entire audience of several hundred invited guests - began with a stylish dinner at the adjacent Ivy, also hosted by APRA and the AGSC, the two organisations which jointly manage the awards.
