WIND WILL CARRY US, THE: DVD

SYNOPSIS:
A group of journalists arrive in a Kurdish village to document the locals' mourning rituals. Awaiting the death of an old woman, they are frustrated by poor mobile reception and her reluctance to die. As the chief engineer (Behzad Dourani) becomes acquainted with the village, his awareness of life's rich offerings increases.

Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Nominated for a Golden Spike, a Golden Frog and a Golden Lion, Abbas Kiarostami's The Wind Will Carry Us finally won the Grand Special Jury Prize and the international critics prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1999 - For its lyrical sense of nature, its intriguing narrative and its trust in the viewer's participation in the creation of its poetry, as the jury put it. And that's a pretty apt citation, because the film does indeed rely on our participation during the many meandering scenes of one man's journey through isolated terrain.

Although he has companions, we don't see them; although he has a mission we don't know it; and although he's sympathetic, we don't understand him. He makes and takes mysterious phone calls on his mobile phone, always seeking higher ground for better reception. He befriends a young boy in the village that he visits, and he waits for an old woman to die, perhaps to photograph the funeral ceremony. But these are vague notions the film only suggests, using some exceptional and exceptionally long single take shots.

The images build up a sense of location and somehow the filmmaker invokes a sense of fatalism, perhaps propelled by the title and where the title comes from - a poem, we discover - and the pure simplicity of the film.
