URBAN CINEFILE - SELECTED HIGHLIGHTS
Urban Cinefile was launched on February 28, 1997, when the internet was
barely an infant. We are proud to have served our readers and the Australian
filmmaking community as an ongoing resource ever since.
SELECTED HIGHLIGHTS
For the record, we have selected some of the milestones that have marked our
progress as Australia’s online movie magazine.
1997
• February 28, 1st edition published; website design by Lyn Tune, website
development by HotHouse in consultation with the Editors
1998
• Winner, Best Arts & Entertainment Site Award, Aust Financial Review/Telstra
Internet Awards
• Begins syndication of content to Telstra BigPond Movies and is first
Australian content partner for AOL
1999
• Begins syndication of content to Yahoo!
• Begins syndication of content to Virtual Communities
• Hosts AFI Awards webcast for AOL (and first live chat on AOL Australia with
Kate Ceberano)
• Andrew & Louise host official Telstra webcast of the opening of Fox Studios;
over 40 Red Carpet interviews with celebrity guests including Baz Luhrmann, Tom
Cruise, Kylie Minogue, Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch;
• National Library of Australia invites Urban Cinefile to participate in
PANDORA, the ongoing web archive, citing it as “an online publication of
cultural value”;
2000
• Andrew & Louise host Telstra webcast of Tropfest
• Begins syndication of content to LookSmart
• Finalist, Best Entertainment Site in the Aust Fin Review Awards (last one
held).
2001
• Andrew & Louise host Telstra webcast of Tropfest
• Russell Crowe presents inaugural Urban Cinefile Birthday Honours for
Outstanding Achievement by Australians in Film, on broadband – and is inaugural
inductee in our Hall of Fame
• Begins syndication to Excite (later merged with Optus)
2002
• Andrew appointed Channel Host, Subscription TV Channel World Movies (continues
until November 2006)
2003
• Begins syndicating streaming movie reviews to Optus for mobile phones (in
association with AAP)
2004
• Produces doco of Screen Producers Assoc of Australia conference. Distributed
on DVD internationally as well as to local industry and politicians
• Urban Cinefile editors host and produce short weekly movie review program,
Movies This Week, syndicated to leading arts and entertainment channels, Ovation
and World Movies
2005
• Begins syndication of movie reviews and other content to CitySearch
• Urban Cinefile establishes and sponsors formal Audience Awards at the Sydney
Film Festival, creating six categories across the two major programming strands
(World Cinema & Sidebar Program)
2006
• Launch of The Filmmakers’ Studio, a joint venture with 25 year old Metro
Screen, monthly series of intimate studio interviews with established Australian
filmmakers; inaugural year guests include Cate Shortland, Bruce Beresford, John
Seale, Al Clark, Phillip Noyce, Susie Porter, Jason Ballantine
• Again sponsors the Urban Cinefile Audience Awards at the Sydney Film Festival;
2007
• AFTRS Centre for Screen Business commissions Urban Cinefile’s Editor to
produce & execute an extensive series of on camera interviews of industry
practitioners as an online resource for its website.
• February 19: 10th anniversary party and Forum (The Future of Movies) at
Chauvel Cinema; February 22, 520th weekly edition published.
2008
* Urban Cinefile produces Doing Dungog, a 50 minute documentary on Dungog Film
Festival
* Andrew records 30 on camera interviews for the Living Democracy exhibition at
the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House
* Urban Cinefile presents Introduction to World Movies series at Trinity Grammar
2009
* Andrew launches MugaBegone, online petition to oust Robert Mugabe from
Zimbabwe
* Doing Dungog is broadcast in April on TV Sydney
* Production continues on The Knowledge for AFTRS, and transcripts from the
series begin to appear in the new bi-annual AFTRS publication, Lumina
* Andrew commissioned to research Art of Influence exhibition for Museum of
Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House
* Andrew presents more Best of International Cinema and Movies Now courses at
Sydney University's Centre for Continuing Education
2012
* February 16, 2012 - our 780th weekly issue published. Our 15th anniversary.
