"Made seven years ago, Atlantis is Luc Besson’s plea for the world
underwater, where marine life fights man’s ignorance or greed for survival. Besson, a
seasoned deep sea diver, made the film as both a celebration of the wonders of this world
and as an essay in favour of a concerted effort to protect the sea from man’s
actions. With his creative flair (he later made the exotic sci fi adventure, The Fifth
Element), Besson adds to the images with sometimes jocular sometimes pointed musical
references, turning the documentary into something more moving and lasting. Although much
has been done in underwater filming, Atlantis stands apart for its focused emotional
message."
