BAFTA 2013 - NOMINATIONS

The nominees for Outstanding British Film in this year’s BAFTA nominations is almost interchangeable with the Best Film nominations, showing the exceptionally strong year for excellence in English language filmmaking – with a few nods to the French. Andrew L. Urban looks over the list.

Those Brits are to be congratulated and the BAFTAs are the place to do it; while they recognise in Stephen Spielberg’s Lincoln an astonishing contribution to history in cinema as well as cinema history, the Academy members (unlike their US counterparts) also recognise the excellence of Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina.

The special category for British film gives the Brits a chance to parade their wares and this year there are several, from Skyfall to Les Miserables, as well as Anna Karenina. The split does the job of spreading nominations glory better than the Oscars simplistic doubling of Best Film nominations to 10 slots.

But then Awards in the movie world are all a bit outdated in my view (as I have editorialised recently)

There are no surprising entries, although it’s interesting to note that Christoph Waltz has been put forward for a Supporting Actor award by the producers of Django Unchained, even though his is a starring role, alongside Jamie Foxx. But in a year when Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln), Ben Affleck (Argo), and Joaquin Phoenix (The Master) are nominated for lead roles, it’s probably a clever move. But then Helen Hunt is in a Supporting category, too, although she is the female star of The Sessions.
