CANNES 2013 - DIRECTOR'S FORTNIGHT

THE JODOROWSKY EDITION
Do you remember Sante Sangre? Not unless you’ve seen it, perhaps, in which case you cannot forget it, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s bloody and bizarre cinematic 1989 foot-stamp if a film; well, Alejandro is back with his first film since then, La danza de la realidad, and it has its world premiere in Directors Fortnight, starring Alejandro and much of his family, which is apt since it’s the story of his childhood in Chile. He also stars (as himself) in the Fortnight’s Alejandro’s Dune, a documentary by Franck Pavich.

Jodorowsky is not the only one double billed at Cannes this year: Anurag Kashyap’s debut feature, Ugly has its world premiere in Director’s Fortnight, and his Bombay Talkies is screening as a special event in the Festival celebrating Indian cinema. Kashayap’s epic, award winning Gangs of Wasseypur was also screened here in 2012. (And Roman Polanski has two films in the Festival, one in Competition …)

Ugly stars Ronit Roy, who also starred in Kashyap’s Udaan (2010) and has the unusual distinction of having won the both Screen Weekly and International Indian Film Academy’s Popular Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role. (This is a great award category and should be included immediately in all movie awards.)

Nor is Jodorowsky’s the only Chilean film; Sebastian Silva’s Magic Magic has its international premiere at the Fortnight. The horror pic stars Emily Browning, Michael Cera, Juno Temple and Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace). In remote Chile, a vacationing young woman begins to mentally unravel; meanwhile, her friends ignore her claim until it's too late.

As for star power, Ari Folman’s Congress leads the way with its line up of Robin Wright, Harvey Keitel, Jon Hamm, Paul Giamatti, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Danny Huston. Not far behind is Ruairi Robinson’s Last Days on Mars, with Liev Schreiber, Romola Garai, Elias Koteas, Olivia Williams. French star power comes in the form of Isabelle Huppert and Sandrine Kiberlain in Serge Bozon’s Tip Top, and the legendary Jeanne Moreau in Un Voyageur by Marcel Ophuls.

CANNES 2013 - PREVIEW

POSTCARDS FROM CANNES 2013

Jodorowsky’s Dune

Santa Sangre (1989)

The 2013 Directors Fortnight is awarding Jane Campion the Carrosse d'Or, “for her innovative qualities, her courage and independent mindedness”. The award is a bronze statuette inspired by the figures of the Comedia dell'Arte and Jean Renoir's 1952 film of the same name – it was created by painter-sculptor Lili Legouvello.
