ONCE UPON A DEADPOOL

SYNOPSIS:
Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), the dead cool, foul mouthed anti-hero reads a cleaned up version of Deadpool 2 to the kidnapped action, Fred Savage, as he is duct-taped to the bed.

Review by Louise Keller:
Capitalising on the Deadpool brand, this cleaned up version of Marvel's 'filthiest hero' is an interesting conceit, offering a wink nudge experience on what is essentially a Director's Cut. Former stuntman and actor, director David Leitch's film is irreverent, nonsensical and quirky as Ryan Reynold's Wade (aka Deadpool), handsome features camouflaged by bad skin and disfigurement, reads the censored version of the franchise to a grown-up Fred Savage.

When the film begins, Deadpool wakes the kidnapped Savage ('kidnapping is unsolicited location enhancement') and the fun begins. I felt as though I was on a trampoline, soaring to different heights of insanity through a barrage of crazy ideas, situations and characters. The dialogue makes you shake your head in disbelief: 'If you want to be a contract killer, you have to be able to handle a mop before you handle a gun'; 'I thought you saw me with your ears' (to the blind woman); Being a hero only takes a few moments: doing the ugly stuff no-one else will do.'

I like the idea of the remote control that Deadpool uses to bleep out offensive dialogue; the scene when he bleeps Savage's lines involving a fight-wish with Matt Damon is dead funny. The use of music is also terrific.

If you like the Deadpool characters and style of black humour, you'll have fun as the ideas wash over you. It's kickass and bold; as to whether it is as clever as it purports to be - that is for you to decide.
