CINEMATOGRAPHY AWARDS (NSW) 2001

TOP SHOTS
Some of Australia’s top cinematographers gathered to recognise the best work of their peers at Sydney’s Darling Harbour last weekend, and awarded Gold to three feature films shot by Australians; Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles by David Burr, Lantana by Mandy Walker and Mullet by Robert Humphreys.

Kim Batterham’s work on One Night the Moon was also awarded Gold, but the entry was in the short fiction drama category, being 57 minutes long; Batterham also won a Silver in this category for Saturn’s Return. Tristan Milani won a Silver for his work on The Bank.

The Dockside dinner was well attended, but several of the winners were absent – working interstate or overseas. Guest of honour at the event was film critic and filmmaker Peter Thomson, and Academy Award winner John Seale and his wife Louise were among the guests, together with Peter James, just out of hospital, whose latest film, The Man Who Sued God, had just opened at No 1 at the Australian box office.

As usual, the awards presentation featured extensive footage from the winning entries, putting the focus on the work itself. The national awards will be presented at the same venue in May 2002.
