7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD: DVD
Sinbad sets off to the island of Colossus to try and break the spell cast on his beloved princess, shrunk by a wicked magician to the size of a finger. He has to overcome the giant man eating cyclops, the sword-playing skeleton, the serpent-woman with four arms and the two headed bird. Among other dangers….
Review by Andrew L. Urban:
Packed with features, this is a DVD for the film enthusiast/historian - and for children. The classic, old fashioned adventure, the exotic settings and solid story telling - in original widescreen format - will satisfy youngsters, and even though the effects seem basic, they are nonetheless …well, effective. The legendary animator Ray Harryhousen proves that a good filmmaker makes use of his audience’s imaginations as well as the cinematic tools of trade.
Instantly engaging and visually rich, the film provides a jumping off point for the DVD to explore Harryhousen's tricks of the trade (including one featurette in which he discussed Jason and The Argonauts). This Is Dynamation reveals how the optical effects were achieved, and goes into some detail about the shooting of the sword fight between the hero, Sinbad, and the skeleton. There is a striking similarity in the way the fight is staged to the fight scene in The Mummy, where Brendan Fraser battles several skeletons. Not only is the effect created in similar style, although with different technology, it is even staged in a similar room, with a giant central table.
In The Harryhousen Chronicles, another featurette, we learn that it was seeing King Kong in 1934 that started Ray in his fascination for stop motion animation film effects.
There is a terrific insight into the making of the film from Kerwin Matthews, who relates how he arrived for shooting in Spain one night, to be ushered straight into wardrobe and told his first scene was looking for "a match sized girl".
Previews, trailers and other items add up to an extensive program on this high quality DVD.
